History of Pakistan Athletics 1988 - Onwards

24thOlympic Games – Seoul – 1988

A 3 player's team squad participated in this competition. Unfortunately no one of them was able to get position for Pakistan.


IAAF Permit Meet – New Delhi & Calcutta – Sept, 1989

10 players from Pakistan participated in this competition where 29 other countries came to participate. Pakistani athletes got three medals for Pakistan.

Ø Nadir Khan earned the first bronze medal sailing over 4.70 m height in Pole Vault.

Then all the players went to Calcutta where;

Ø Muhammad Afzal got bronze medal in 400 mrace with the timing of 48.0 secs.

Ø Nadier Khan was the third to get a bronze in 1500 m race.


4th SAF Games – Islamabad (Pakistan) -Oct, 1989

Pakistan hosted the fourth SAF Games at Islamabad, total 41 males and 16 females participated in this competition. Pakistan won 11 Gold, 8 Silvers and 8 Bronze medals.

Ø Ghulam Abbas won gold medal in 110 m Hurdle Race.

Ø Kafayat Hussain won gold Medal in Shot Put.

Ø Abdul Razzaq won gold medal in 3000 Steep chase.

Ø MuhammagUrfaq won Gold medal in Long Jump.

Ø MuhamadSadaqat won the gold medal in 400 m race.

Ø Manik Khan won the gold medal in 10,000 m race.

Ø Nadier Khan won the gold medal in 800 m race.

Ø Ghulam Abbas got gold medal in 400 m hurdle race.

Ø Muhammad Sadaqat, Behr-i-Karam, Bashir Ahmed and m, Fayyaz won the Gold medal in 4X400 m Relay Race.

Ø MuhammdYar, Ghufran Ahmed, Muhammad Fayyaz, Naheed Raza, Salman Butt, Manik Khan, Muhammad Aslam,and Nadir Khan got Silver medals.

Ø Muhammad Saddique, Muhammad Muneer, Muhammad Rauf, Israr Gul, Naheed Raza, Javid Iqbal, Ghulam Bari, (Noushba Khan, Shabana Akhter, NaheedHalai, Cheryl Lucas 4X100M Relay Race) got Bronze medals for Pakistan.


An eight member Pakistan 'B' team participated in the competition.

Ø Only the Bronze medal was won by Ghulam Bari in Hammer Throw.


11thAsian Games – Beijing – Sept, 1990

13 players, 10 male & 3 female participated in this competition from Pakistan.

Ø Ghulam Abbas won Gold Medal in 400 m Hurdle Race.

Ø Nadir Khan Won Bronze Medal in 800 m race.


IAAF Permit Meet – New Delhi -1991

Ø Ghufran Khan won the Bronze Medal in short put by putting the short ta a distance of 17.27 m.

Ø Banaras Khan also won Bronze medal in Triple Jump.


Asian Track & Field Championship – Kuala Lumpur – Oct, 1991

A 12 number of players took part in this competition. Pakistani team got 2 Silver and a Bronze medal.


5th SAF Games Colombo (Sri Lanka)– Dec, 1991

Squads of 32 players consist of 27 males & 5 females participated in this competition.

Ø Muhammad Sadaqat won gold Medal in 400 m race.

Ø Nadir Khan and Ghulam Abbas won Gold medal in 110& 400 M hurdles races.

Ø Banaras Khan, Ghufran Hussain, Muhammad Rashid, won Gold Medal in 4X400 m Realay race.

Ø Nadir Khan, Manik Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Muhammad Urfaq, Salman Iqbal Butt (Discus Throw) won Silver Medals.

Ø Ramzan Ali, Naheed Raza, Ehtashmul- Haq won Bronze medals in Discus Throw & Shot Put.


25thOlympic Games – Barcelona – 1992

A 4 player's team squad participated in this competition. Unfortunately no one of them was able to get position for Pakistan.


Asian Junior Track & Field Championship – New Delhi – 1992

Pakistan got 3 Silver and a Bronze medal.

Ø Zafar Iqbal got Silver medals in 800 m & 1500 m races.

Ø Aqarab Khan won Bronze medal in Hammer throw.

Ø M Farooq, Shahzad Ishaquet, M. Saeed, Rafeque won the silver medal in 4 x 400m Relay.


First Islamic Countries Women's Games – Tehran – Feb, 1993

Total 7 female Athletes took part in competition.11 Islamic countries participated in this competition. Pakistan stood fifth. Pakistan succeeded to secure 10 medals. Shbana Akhter of Pakistan Army attained three silver medals in various events.


6thSAF Games – Dhaka – Bangladesh – 20-27 Dec, 1993

A 23 numbers of athlete participated in this competition. Pakistan got three Gold, six Silver & five Bronze medals.

Ø Muhammad Ari Hussain got 4th position in 100 m race & 3rd in 200 m race.

Ø Zafar Iqbal got 2nd position in 800 m &1500 m race.

Ø Muhammad Sadaqat got 2nd position in 400 m race.

Ø Muhammad Siddique got 3rd position in 5000 m race & 2nd position in 3000 race.

Ø Razzaq got 3rd position in 110 Hurdle race.

Ø Muhammad Amin got 1st& Abbas got 3rd position in 400 Hurdle race.

Ø Banaras khan got 2nd position in Long Jump.

Ø Ghufran got 1st position in Shot Put.

Ø Muhammad Javid got 3rd position in Discus Throw.

Ø Aqarab Khan got 2nd position in Hammer throw.

Ø Shabana Akhter got 1st position in Long Jump.


12th Asian Games Hiroshima Oct. 1994

Five took part in this competition. Only Aqarab Khan got Bronze medal in Hammer Throw.


7th SAF Games Madras (India) – Dec, 1995

Ø 19 male and 7 female athletes took part in this competition from Pakistan.

Ø Aqarab Hussain won Gold medal in Hammer Throw with a distance of 66.94 m.

Ø Abdul Razzaq got Silver medal in in 110 Hurdle race with a timing of 14.45 secs.

Ø Muhammad Amin got Silver medal in 400 m Hurdle race with a timing of 00:51.35secs.

Ø Muhammad Sadaqat got Bronze medal in 400 m race with the timing of 00:47.81 secs.

Ø Rafique got Bronze medal in 400 m Hurdle race.

Ø Faryad Hussain got Bronze medal in 3000 m (Steeplechase).

Ø Banaras Khan got Bronze medal In triple Jump.

Ø Ghufran got Bronze medal in Shot Put.

Ø Muhammad Javid got Bronze medal in Discus Throw.

Ø Gul Rehman, Muhammad Sadaqat, Maqsood Ahmed, Shabbir Hussain got Bronze medal in 4X400 m Relay Race..

Ø Shbana Akhter won Gold medal in Long Jump with the distance of 06.31 m.

Ø Shbana, ErumKhanam, NasiraBalqees, Tahiraperveen, got Bronze medalin 4X100 m race.

Ø ZeenatPerveen got Bronze medal in Shot Put.


26thOlympic Games – Atlanta (America)-1996

Aqarab Abbas and Shbana Akhter took part in this competition, couldn't get any medal for Pakistan.


13th Asian Games Bangkok (Thailand) 1998

No medal for Pakistan.


8th SAF Games Katmandu (Nepal) - 1999

Total 23 male and 7 female participated in this competition. Pakistan won total 16 medals, 2 Gold, 4 Silver, 10 Bronze, and got third position in South Asian Countries.

Ø Maqsood Ahmed won Gold medal in 200 m race

Ø RehanaKoser won Gold medal in High jump.

Ø Faryad Hussain got Silver medal in 3000 Steepal Chase.

Ø Allah Ditta got Silver Medal in 110 m Hurdles.

Ø Muhammad Javid Got Silver medal in Discus Throw.

Ø ZeenatPerveen got Bronze medal in Shot Put.

Ø ShabanaKosar got Bronze medal in Javelin Throw.

Ø Pakistan also won Silver medal in 4X100 Relay race.


27thOlympic Games – Sidney (Australia)-2000

ShaziaHadayat and Maqsood Ahmed got the chance to participate in this competition, but couldn't qualify for the final round.


14th Asian Games Boson (South Korea) 2002

No medal for Pakistan.


9 th SAF Games Islamabad (Pakistan) - 2004

46 male and 10 female athletes participated in this competition. Pakistan won total 25 medals, 5 Gold, 8 Silver and 12 Bronze in South Asian Games. Pakistan secured 3rd position in the 9th Asian Games.

Ø AttanMeeran got Gold medal in1500 m race.

Ø Noshad khan got Gold medal in5000m race.

Ø Abdul Rashid won gold Medal in 110 m Hurdle race.

Ø Allah Ditta won Gold medal in 400 m Hurdles.

Ø Nadeem Ahmed won Gold medal in Hammer Throw.

Ø Imran Tahir got Silver medal in 200 m race.

Ø Muhammad Shah won Silver medal in 110 m Hurdle race.

Ø Gulam Abbas won Silver medal in Long Jump.

Ø Zafar Iqbal got Silver medal in Triple Jump.

Ø Habib Ullah got Silver medal in Hammer Throw.

Ø Zahid Hussain got Silver medal in Javelin Throw.

Ø SameraZahoor got Silver medal in 1500 m race.

Ø In 12 Bronze medals, male athletes got 9 and females got 3 medals.


28thOlympic Games – Athens -2004

SameraZahoor and Muhammad Sajid participated in this competition, but couldn't qualify for the final round.


10 th SAF Games Colombo (Sri Lanka) 2006

From Pakistan 39 male athletes and 10 female athletes participated in this competition. Overall Pakistan won 20 Gold medals, 3 Silvers and 13 bronze medals.

Ø Haq Nawaz won Gold Medal in 400 m hurdle race.

Sadaf Siddique and Abdul Rashid participated in Olympic Games, couldn't get any medal for Pakistan.


11 th SAF Games Dhaka (Bangladesh) - 2010

From Pakistan -- male athletes and -- female athletes participated in this competition. Overall Pakistan won 4 Gold medals, 2 Silvers and 4 bronze medals.

Ø Liaqat Ali won Bronze medal in 100 m

Ø Liaqat Ali won Bronze medal in 200 m.

Ø Haq Nawaz won Silver medal in 400 m hurdle race.
